Field Investigation into Tree Fates from Recent Apple Tree Decline: Abrupt Hydraulic Failure Versus Gradual Hydraulic Loss

چکیده

In the last decade, a sporadic tree health syndrome affecting high-density apple plantings in North America has become known as Rapid Apple Decline (RAD) or Sudden (SAD). The affected trees were typically grafted on small dwarfing rootstocks, often displayed necrosis at graft union, and suffered from sudden mortality that occurred over 2–3 weeks amid growing season gradual decline. 2019 2020, we conducted multi-site investigation south Okanagan, British Columbia, Canada, to assess stem hydraulic characteristics, stomatal conductance, leaf δ13C‰, fruit dry matter accumulation of declining during disease progression. died, appeared be associated with severe disruption xylem water transport damaged followed by abrupt failure. contrast, symptomatic did not die exhibited moderately declined plant relations reduction either further deterioration eventual recovery. This pattern indicates risk carbohydrate depletion decline importance timely horticultural remedies. present study, discuss potential practices mitigate dysfunctions enhance crop tolerance.

An Integrated View of Whole-Tree Hydraulic Architecture. Does Stomatal or Hydraulic Conductance Determine Whole Tree Transpiration?

Hydraulic conductance exerts a strong influence on many aspects of plant physiology, namely: transpiration, CO2 assimilation, growth, productivity or stress response. However we lack full understanding of the contribution of root or shoot water transport capacity to the total water balance, something which is difficult to study in trees. Here we tested the hypothesis that whole plant hydraulic ...

Recent advances in tree hydraulics highlight the ecological significance of the hydraulic safety margin.

Drought-induced cavitation resistance varies considerably between tree species and forest ecosystems (Maherali et al., 2004; Delzon et al., 2010) and is closely linked to survival under severe drought in both conifers (Brodribb & Cochard, 2009; Brodribb et al., 2010) and angiosperms (Kursar et al., 2009; Anderegg et al., 2012; Barigah et al., 2013; Urli et al., 2013). Choat et al. (2012) recent...

Investigation of a hydraulic impact

Finite element method and dimensional analysis have been applied in the present paper to study a hydraulic impact, which is used in a non-explosive rock breaking technology in mining industry. The impact process of a high speed piston on liquid water, previously introduced in a borehole drilled in rock, is numerically simulated. The research is focused on the influence of all the parameters inv...

Hydraulic patterns and safety margins, from stem to stomata, in three eastern U.S. tree species.

Adequate water transport is necessary to prevent stomatal closure and allow for photosynthesis. Dysfunction in the water transport pathway can result in stomatal closure, and can be deleterious to overall plant health and survival. Although much is known about small branch hydraulics, little is known about the coordination of leaf and stem hydraulic function. Additionally, the daily variations ...
